The Baltic Pipe gas pipeline was opened in Poland. It will annually supply 10 billion cubic meters of gas from Norway (the same amount was previously supplied by the Russian Federation)

The opening ceremony of the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline between Poland and Denmark took place in the Polish city of Goleniow. The event was attended by President and Prime Minister of Poland Andrzej Duda and Mateusz Morawiecki, as well as Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen.

“The era of Russian dominance in the gas sector is coming to an end, an era marked by blackmail, threats and extortion,” Euronews quotes Mateusz Morawiecki as saying.

Baltic Pipe will supply gas to Poland and neighboring countries from Norway. According to the statement of the European Commission, the gas pipeline will be able to supply up to 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

The start of deliveries is scheduled for October 1, 2022, and the Danish energy company Energinet says that by the end of November the gas pipeline will be able to operate at full capacity.

• Poland annually consumes about 20 billion cubic meters of gas. Previously, up to half of this volume was supplied by Russia through the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline. However, in April 2022, Poland refused to pay for Russian gas in rubles, and the next day, Gazprom stopped deliveries. In May, Poland prematurely terminated the agreement on gas supplies from Russia, which had been in force since 1993.
