SVT: seismologists detect two explosions in the area of Nord Stream pipeline gas leaks

Swedish and Danish seismic stations have documented two major underwater explosions in the area of the gas leaks on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines, SVT TV channel reports.

The Swedish National Seismic Network documented the first explosion in the early hours of 26 September, and the second one on the evening of 26 September.

“One of the explosions had a magnitude of 2.3 and was registered at 30 measuring stations in southern Sweden,” SVT writes.

The TV channel received the coordinates of the explosions. The reporters claim that they are located in the same area where the gas leaks were previously detected.

On 26 September, gas leaks were reported on two strings of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline in the exclusive economic zone of Denmark to the northeast of the island of Bornholm. Later, another leak was documented on one of the strings of Nord Stream 2 in Denmark’s exclusive economic zone to the southeast of Bornholm. It is not clear how long it will take specialists to fix the damage, the company said.

Earlier today, German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel reported that the pipelines might have been damaged by divers or attacked from a submarine. The investigation is considering two versions of what happened: one version says Ukraine or pro-Ukrainian forces are behind the attack, while the other one suggests that Russia may have been involved in the incident, the newspaper notes.
