On September 30, Ukraine will apply for an accelerated entry of the country to NATO. This was stated by President Vladimir Zelensky. “De facto we have already gone our way to NATO. Today, Ukraine is applying to do this de jure. <...> in an accelerated manner, ”Zelensky said.
The President of Ukraine made his statement shortly after Vladimir Putin signed the agreements on which Russia annexes the captured territories of Ukraine - self -proclaimed DPR, LPR, as well as parts of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhya regions.
Before signing the contracts, Putin called on Ukraine to return to negotiations with Russia, but emphasized that Moscow would not discuss the results of the “referendums” in the occupied territories. On September 23-27, “referendums” were held in the controlled territories of four regions. According to local Tsiks, residents spoke out for joining Russia.
Before the end of the “referendums”, Zelensky said that if Russia annexes the captured territories, he will not conduct any negotiations with it. On Friday, he said that he was now ready to negotiate with Russia only when it will be headed by a new president. The Ukrainian leader added that the entire territory of Ukraine should be released.
The desire of Ukraine to join NATO Putin called one of the reason for the beginning of the war. In the spring, when negotiations were still underway between Russia and Ukraine, Zelensky proposed abandoning plans to join NATO. After the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Sweden and Finland submitted applications for NATO membership.
