The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on the eve recognized the sovereignty of the self-proclaimed Chechen Republic of Ichkeria and its "temporary occupation" by Russia. The deputies also condemned the genocide of the Chechen people. In addition, an electronic platform is being prepared in Ukraine, where referendums on recognizing the independence of such Russian regions as Dagestan, Tatarstan and Bashkortostan can be held.
The self-proclaimed state of Ichkeria appeared after the collapse of the USSR on the territory of Chechnya. In July 1991, they declared independence there, Russia did not recognize it. After a full-scale military campaign by the Russian army, Ichkeria de facto ceased to exist.
Prime Minister of Ichkeria in exile Akhmed Zakayev called the decision of the Verkhovna Rada a historic event for the Chechens and for all "peoples oppressed by the Kremlin." He also noted that the work on recognition of the republic's independence is being carried out with the governments of other countries.
The Verkhovna Rada also stated that they are closely following the national movements of the Bashkirs, Tatars, Kumyks, Ingush, Kalmyks, Erzya and small peoples living in Russia.
The representative of the Servant of the People faction in the Verkhovna Rada, Oleg Dunda, said that the “dismantling of the empire” was significantly accelerated due to Russia’s attack on Ukraine. According to him, the Ukrainian deputies will adopt similar resolutions regarding other Russian subjects within one to two weeks.
“I think that at the end of 2022 - the beginning of 2023. scheduled referendums will be held in Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, the Kaliningrad region, most likely in almost all regions of the North Caucasus, possibly Buryatia ... There has not been and will not be any referendum on Ichkeria, because back in the 1990s. Ichkeria held a corresponding vote, recognizing its independent status,” Dunda explained.
He also noted that the Verkhovna Rada will write appeals to international bodies, including the UN, on the legalization of the sovereignty of the republics that want to secede from Russia.
