Co-founder, CEO and publisher of Meduza Galina Timchenko received the Prix Europa media festival award in the European Journalist of the Year category. This is reported on the festival website.
The awards ceremony took place on October 28 in Potsdam. Other laureates included media representatives from Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and the UK.
Receiving the award, Galina Timchenko said: “I want to express just one simple thought. Any war begins with an attempt to silence independent journalism, with restrictions on freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is always the first casualty of the coming war. Let's try to prevent this from happening again."
- The Prix Europa media festival was created in 1987 by the authorities of the European Union, including the European Parliament and the European Commission. The management of the festival's organizational structure includes top managers of television and radio broadcasting corporations from different EU countries. The award ceremony for the winners of the festival takes place every year in October.
- Last year, the prize in the category “European Journalist of the Year” was awarded to Belarusian journalists Katerina Andreeva and Daria Chultsova, whowere convicted of streaming protests in Minsk in 2020. Daria Chultsova was released in 2022, and Katerina Andreeva received a new sentence - eight years for “treason to the state.”
