The Russian command announced a retreat from Kherson

The commander of Russian troops in Ukraine, Sergei Surovikin, suggested that Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu leave the right-bank part of the Kherson region, where Kherson is located. Surovikin's report was broadcast by the Russia 24 TV channel.

Shoigu agreed with Surovikin's proposal.

Surovikin said that in the current conditions Kherson and nearby settlements cannot be fully supplied. “Having assessed the situation, I propose to take up defense along the left bank of the Dnieper,” he said. Surovikin called the decision "difficult" but said it would save people's lives.

“For us, the life and health of Russian servicemen is always a priority. We must also take into account the threat to the civilian population. <...> Proceed with the withdrawal of troops and take all measures for the safe transfer of equipment, weapons and personnel across the Dnieper River, ”Shoigu said.

• Russia captured Kherson in early March, in the first days after the invasion of Ukrainian territory. This city became the only regional center captured by the Russian army since the beginning of the war.
• In the summer, having received long-range artillery systems, Ukraine began shelling bridges in the Kherson region. This made it difficult to supply the group of Russian troops on the right bank of the Dnieper in the Kherson region, where Kherson itself is located.
• At the end of September, Russia annexed the Kherson region along with other captured territories of Ukraine. In mid-October, amid anticipation of a counter-offensive by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Russian-appointed authorities of the Kherson region announced the “evacuation” of the civilian population from the right bank of the Dnieper.
• On November 7, sources for Meduza reported that the Kremlin had instructed public opinion in Russia to be prepared for the possibility of Kherson being abandoned.
