The Russian military may use electromagnetic weapons to disable Ukrainian infrastructure. The Financial Times writes that preparations for an EMP strike may actually be behind the nuclear threats.

Former Pentagon official Roger Pardo-Mauer believes that an electromagnetic pulse of sufficient strength can be generated by detonating a nuclear weapon in space. Such a blow disables all electrical equipment, both military and civilian.

In the Kherson region, for example, an EMP strike could disable the systems that control the region's dams, as well as lead to power, heat and water outages. In addition, many kilometers of traffic jams can form on the roads due to disabled cars.

Even a localized Russian EMP strike on Ukraine would provoke a collective NATO response, Pardo-Mauer said.

“The unpredictable side effects on the Earth’s atmosphere, the environment, satellites and the population should be a good reason to activate Article 5 on joint defense,” said a former Pentagon official.
