The US Department of Commerce has stripped the Russian economy of its market status due to "widespread intervention" by the state. A similar status was assigned to the Russian economy 20 years ago.
"This decision gives the United States the opportunity to use the full force of US anti-dumping laws to address market distortions caused by the Russian government's increasing interference in their economy," the US Department said in a statement.
In addition to Russia, there are 11 more countries on the US list with the status of a non-market economy. These are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov believes that the decision of the US Treasury is contrary to logic. He called the publication of the general license, which allows US persons to engage in transactions necessary for the operation of Russian diplomatic and consular missions, positive. At the same time, Antonov stressed that this "does not relieve the United States of responsibility for imbalances in world markets, which are caused by numerous illegitimate unilateral barriers."
