The head of the CIA met in Turkey with the director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service - and warned about the consequences of the use of nuclear weapons

In Ankara, CIA Director William Burns met with the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) of Russia, Sergei Naryshkin, at which, according to CNN, "the consequences of the use of nuclear weapons by Russia" were discussed.

“He is conveying a message about the consequences of the use of nuclear weapons by Russia and the danger of escalation for strategic stability,” a representative of the US National Security Council told the channel, commenting on Burns's position at this meeting.

The settlement of the conflict in Ukraine was not discussed at the meeting, according to CNN. “We firmly adhere to our basic principle: not a word about Ukraine without Ukraine itself,” the representative of the National Security Council emphasized. He noted that the United States informed Kyiv about the meeting between Burns and Naryshkin before it took place.

According to CNN's interlocutor, the United States continues to maintain channels of communication with Russia designed to prevent nuclear escalation - and the meeting was held as part of this strategy.

• The Wall Street Journal reported a week earlier that National Security Adviser Joe Sullivan had held a series of meetings in recent months with presidential aide Yuri Ushakov and Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev. At these meetings, according to the publication, the maintenance of communication channels was also discussed, and not a settlement in Ukraine.
• On November 7, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine had five conditions to start negotiations with Russia – “the restoration of territorial integrity, respect for the UN Charter, compensation for all losses caused by the war, punishment of every war criminal and guarantees that this will not happen again.”
• Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed readiness for negotiations with Ukraine, but on Russian terms. According to Meduza sources, Russia would like to conclude a temporary truce in order to prepare a new offensive in Ukraine.
