"Peripheral devices" - a fantastic series from the producers of the "Wild West World"

The main role was played by Chloe Grace Motz - and this is the most successful find of the show

On Amazon Prime Video is the series “Peripheral Devices”, shot according to the same fantastic book by William Gibson. The producers of the show are the creators of the HBO Super Hbo “Wild West”. In their new project, the action takes place in reality and in a computer game, too much resembling reality. And although there is roughness in the script, the series is definitely worth watching at least for the sake of Chloe Grace Motz, who played the main role.

The veteran of the American Marine Corps Burton Fisher (Jack Reinor, famous for the role of toxic boyfriend in the "solstice" of Ari Aster) on the motorcycle cuts the futuristic night London. The female voice orders the hero what to do. The Marine Morpoha is waiting for the James Bond Mission: to come to the closed party of an unknown corporation, seduce the girl, and then lut out her, while not allowing her to kill her robot-guide, similar to an ominous mannequin. We are in a computer game of a new level: everything in it is real and tangible, as in life, Morpeh is an avatar controlled by Flynn (Chloe Grace Morets), a sister of a real Fisher who gave her access to her character. She sits in her trailer in the American wilderness in the forests of the Appalachi - and is delighted with the new computer simulation, but not for long. Very soon Flynn, like the audience, will understand that this is not a game at all.

Does everything already look quite confusing? And these are only the edge of the world, invented by the father of Cyberpan William Gibson in the book “Peripheral Devices”. The 500-page romance published in 2014 has such an incredible density that even the writer fans recommend reading it, armed with glossary on the world invented by Gibson.

The creative and marital union, which invented the HBO Super Hbo “Wild West”, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy returned with a new fantastic story, but already on Amazon. True, unlike the “Wild West World,” where Joy and Nolan were showranins and, together with the co -authors, wrote his most successful, enthusiastically accepted by critics and spectators for the first season, in “peripheral devices” they act exclusively in the role of producers.

In the show of showranner of “peripheral devices” - writer and screenwriter Sam B. Smith, a nominee for the Oscar Award for the best scenario of a perhaps the Cohen Cohen Cohen Brothers, “Simple Plan”, Sam Raimi. The pilot series of “peripheral devices” was shot by Vincenzo Natalie, the director of the science fiction horror “Cube” and “Himire”. Five of the planned eight episodes have been published on the streaming of Amazon Prime, and now we can say that this is a success: the creators of the series managed to transfer ideas and images to the screen, not outraged by the fans of Gibson and making the writer’s world for a wide audience more smooth and generally possible.

The action of the series develops in two eras: in the near future of provincial America of 2039, where the brother and sister of Fisher earn a living, playing computer games, and in the distant future of the deserted London of 2099, where gigantic and the London eye - figures of Greek gods, as if decaying into marble pixels rise in the sky above the city.

In London, the audience will get acquainted with Wilf Nezeron (Gary Carr), looking for his sister Aelita (Charlotte Riley) - it was her voice that gave the manner the order. The mysterious corporation is also looking for Aelita, at whose party Flynn visited the image of her brother. More precisely, the corporation destroys everyone who contacts Aelita, which means that brother and sister Fisher will also fall into their deadly list. Why are they looking for it and why do Fishers who are in another time pose a danger to them? By the middle of the first season, the tangle of secrets is just beginning to get out, the long exposition of Gibson is felt in the series, because of this, the heroes of the distant future appear somewhat flat and stilt, because the audience does not see the true motivation of their actions.

In the heart of the novel and the series - a fantastic, but quite imaginary idea of ​​time travel, where not the body, but data is teleported to the future. The consciousness of the “player” from the present with the help of the helmet of virtual reality is poured into the peripheral body in the future. Flynn travels in time for the first time using the peripheral body of his brother, until her own - a mechanical clone, indistinguishable from herself.

“Peripheral Devices” - the following “Rings of power” is a large television series premiere of Amazon Prime Videos. It is ironic that HBO, a competitor to Amazon, at the same time decided not to prolong the “Wild West World” for the fifth season. Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, in turn, have already signed a five -year -old contract for $ 150 million with Amazon.

Visually “peripheral devices” are also a very expensive series, but its main special effect that does not merge with the landscape flickering machines and not robots without a face like in a “black mirror”. The main luck of the show is Chloe Grace Motz. It is the experiences of her heroine that turn what is happening from a fantastic, but abstract concept into an artistic reality that wants to empathize.

Motzer began acting in cinema and on television as a child and at 11 years old became famous in a parody film about the superheroes "Pipz". Now Motz is 25, she successfully overcame her adolescence and began to play adult roles. “Peripheral devices” is a series for those who missed how it grew up: they ran away from the rebellious robots in the ninth month of pregnancy in the film “Mother/Android” or fought with Gremlins on a flying fighter during World War II in the “shadow in the clouds”. Since the “Pipza”, the actress has already worked with Martin Scorsese, Olivier Assayas and Nile Jordan, but most often she can be seen in fantastic action films, including, for example, a remake of Kingovskaya Carrie.

The development of the script of the second season of “peripheral devices”, according to Jonathan Nolan, is already going on , but there was no official application for the extension of the series from Amazon so far. After the first five episodes, it seems that the “peripheral devices” of Joy and Nolan are unlikely to take a place in the pantheon of science fiction, for this there are too many small roughnesses in the series. But there is still enough screen time to make a jerk (and, for example, to explain what an apocalypse occurred in London, due to which the city streets were empty). The second question is whether the heroine of Chloe Grace Morets will meet herself in the distant future. And for the sake of solving these plot riddles, “peripheral devices” should still be watched to the end.
