Soviet skater, president of the Russian figure skating Federation, Alexander Gorshkov, died at the age of 76. It is reported by TASS. The causes of death are not specified.
Alexander Gorshkov is the first Olympic champion in ice in history. He became the winner paired with Lyudmila Pakhomova at the Games in Innsbruck in 1976. Then they announced the departure from amateur sports. Gorshkov and Pakhomov also six times became world and European champions in ice dancing.
Gorshkov - Honored Master of Sports and Honored Coach of the USSR. In 1988, together with Pakhomova, he was introduced into the hall of fame of world figure skating. Since June 2010, he served as the head of the Russian Figure Skating Federation.
Gorshkov and Pakhomov were married. Lyudmila Pakhomova died of cancer in 1986 at the age of 39.
