A Russian soldier from the brigade accused of murders in Bucha asked for political asylum in Spain

Nikita Chibrin, 27, of the 64th Motorized Rifle Brigade, who is accused of killing civilians in Bucha, has requested political asylum in Spain, The Guardian reported.

According to the military, he spent about four months in Ukraine and at the same time he never fired a weapon. According to Chibrin, on February 24, he told the command that he was against the war. After that, he was removed from his post as an army mechanic and threatened with prison, the military said. As a result, they decided to use him as a cleaner and loader.

According to Chibrin, he spent the first month of the war in the village of Lipovka, Kyiv region, where he witnessed robberies. According to him, the Russian military took everything they had, including washing machines and electronics. He also heard that the military from his brigade may be involved in sexualized violence against civilians and killings.

After the retreat from the Kyiv region, Chibrin's unit was sent to Bugaevka, Kharkov region. There, many of the military from his brigade tried to quit, but they were threatened with execution for desertion.

On June 16, Chibrin fled the front, hiding in a truck that was heading to Russia for food. After some time, he contacted the human rights network Gulagu.net, which helped him leave Russia in early November.

When Chibrin got to Madrid, he said that he wanted to testify in an international court and talk about what happened in Ukraine.

“I have nothing to hide, this is a criminal war that Russia started. I want to do everything possible to stop this,” Chibrin said.

Immediately afterwards, Gulagu.net reported that military police and members of the FSB's military counterintelligence department began questioning Chibrin's relatives in an attempt to find out who helped him leave Russia.
