The ECHR awarded compensation to three participants in protests that took place in 2018 and 2019

The European Court of Human Rights awarded compensation to three Russians who took part in protests in 2018 and 2019. Lawyer Maxim Olenichev reported this to OVD-Info.

In 2018, activist Valentin Khoroshenin, who later became a defendant in the Viasna case, was detained at a rally in St. Petersburg. The court fined the young man 10 thousand rubles under the article on participation in a rally that resulted in interference with the functioning of infrastructure (Part 6.1 of Article 20.2 of the Administrative Code). At that time, Khoroshenin was a minor.

The ECHR considered his detention and fine a violation of the right to a fair trial and freedom of assembly. The court awarded the activist compensation of 3,900 euros.

The court awarded the same compensation to two participants of the “Perpetual Protest” from Yekaterinburg, Mikhail Klyukin and Maxim Korchemkin.

In April 2019, activists were detained because of two tombstones of Putin installed near the city administration building. Later, the Leninsky District Court fined them 10 thousand rubles under the article on participation in an unapproved event (Part 5 of Article 20.2 of the Administrative Code).

• On June 11, Vladimir Putin signed a law allowing the Russian government not to implement ECHR decisions taken after March 15, 2022, the day the Russian Federation left the Council of Europe. Despite this, the ECHR continues to consider complaints from Russian citizens if violations of the European Convention occurred before September 16.
