It just so happened that the Russian translation of the new book of the historian of the economy Adam Tuz “ Quarantine, popular in the West. Covid-19-the virus that shocked the world ”(recently reached the publishing house of the Gaidar Institute) appeared in Russia at the height of another existential crisis caused by a war in Ukraine. This makes the book less topical, but therefore no less cognitive and instructive. The author, with his characteristic panoramic review, is trying to comprehend the lessons of the pandemic. Never before the size of the global economy were reduced by 20% in a matter of weeks, and in the following months its condition was mainly worsened (“In the history of modern capitalism, such a fact has not yet been recorded that almost 95% of world economies simultaneously decrease in the per capita of the population”). Why did the struggle with the deadly virus not just united humanity, but additionally exacerbated the contradictions between key players? The answer to this question may seem self -evident: new circumstances have not changed old geopolitical layouts. No matter how dangerous and unpredictable the virus seemed in 2020, he did not solve the problems of international relations, aggravated by the domestic political reality of individual states. In fact, the search for a way out of the planetary crisis, which in the ideal world could become an inspiring example of global cooperation and mutual assistance, the author described in a chapter dedicated to the competition of vaccines.
