The President of Peru tried to dissolve parliament, but he was impeached and accused of attempting a coup.

The Peruvian parliament has impeached President Pedro Castillo after he tried to dissolve the Congress of the Republic with an emergency interim government. As a result, parliamentarians at an emergency meeting announced his impeachment.

At the beginning of the year, Castillo was twice tried to impeach, but both times there were not enough votes to remove him from office. On December 7, the parliament of Peru, in which the opposition has a majority, was going to hold a third vote on impeachment. But a few hours before the meeting, Castillo issued an appeal in which he announced that he was dissolving parliament and immediately introducing a curfew in the country.

The President accused the Parliament of trying to establish a parliamentary dictatorship with the support of the Constitutional Court. Castillo announced that he would organize an interim government, and elections to a new parliament would be held within nine months and a new constitution would be adopted.

Immediately after that, Prime Minister Betsy Chavez and several other ministers resigned. The Constitutional Court called Costillo's actions a failed coup attempt. The president himself was also not supported by the army.

Parliament, contrary to Castillo's decree dissolving it, held an impeachment meeting: 101 deputies voted in favor, six against, and 10 abstained. Vice President Dina Boluarte took the oath of office and became the first woman to lead Peru.

On the evening of December 7, Castillo was detained on charges of rebellion and abuse of power.
