The head of the Ministry of Education, Sergei Kravtsov, proposed to secure in the rules of Russian spelling the spelling of the word “God” with the title letter. The draft new rules has already been prepared. Why this initiative contradicts the Constitution of the secular state and the rules of the Grammar of the Russian language, experts told “such matters”.
Photo: pxher.comThe project of the ministry has already been approved by the government commission in the Russian language, Kravtsov said. He explained the initiative of the department by the fact that the rules of Russian spelling are outdated and require adjustment.
“Let me remind you that the rules of Russian spelling and punctuation were adopted in 1956 and did not regulate the rules for writing words related to the religious sphere. The new draft rules of Russian spelling offers the following: the word “God” must be written with the title letter, as well as with the title letter, the names of the apostles, prophets, saints, ”the minister said.
According to the new rules, it is necessary to write the names of higher beings in monotheistic religions - Christianity, Islam and Judaism: “Lord”, “Creator”, “Almighty”, “Savior”, “Holy Spirit”, “Holy Trinity”, “The Virgin”. In addition, the department offers to write with the title letter of the word that are used in the spiritual sense, for example, “sky”, “church”, “providence” and others.
The abbot of the Moscow Church of the Holy Life -Giving Trinity in Hokhlah Alexei Uminsky is confident that the decision to fix the spelling of the word “God” only with a capital letter is erroneous.
“There are cases when the word“ God ”should be written only with a small letter. For example, if we are talking about gods. For example, in Russian spelling, the names of the Olympic gods were always written with a small letter. "“In Soviet times, the word“ God ”was always written with a small letter - this was part of atheistic propaganda. Then it was possible to write with both large and small letters, depending on what meaning a person put into this word. I think that if you consolidate the word “God” only with a capital letter, it will be a great absurdity, ”Uminsky concluded.
A specialist in the field of Christian philosophy, Deacon Andrei Kuraev also called the proposal of the Ministry of Education strange.
“Maybe now the law is to adopt, how to write:“ in Ukraine ”or“ in Ukraine ”? I see here a violation of the right to the author's style. A person can at his discretion arrange capital letters, interrogative and exclamation signs, ”Kuraev said.
“Finally, there are religious texts and just talking about other people's gods. For example, Christian authors write about their God always with a capital letter, and about ancient Greek - always with a small one. To clarify in this case what God is correct and which is not - for a secular state it is very strange, ”the Deacon concluded.
The rabbi of the Moscow Jewish community "Darki Shalom" did not agree with him.
“Regardless of our religions, we write with the title letter“ Quran ”,“ Talmud ”,“ Gospel ”. This tradition has always been, it disappeared with the revolution and artificial planting of atheism, ”he said.
The spelling of the word “God” will not change the merciful construction of Russians, but at least they will think about the spiritual, the priest believes. “Of course, if a person writes“ God ”, this does not mean that he turns into faith and recognizes the existence of the Creator,” the rabbi explained.
According to a member of the Presidium of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Moscow, Marat Khazrat Alimov, the meaning that a person puts into this word is important, and a second reading. At the same time, he noted that in most works of Russian authors the word “God” was written with the title letter.
“In Islam, we were given 99 attributes of the name of God:“ all -working ”,“ all -mall ”,“ merciful ”,“ granting ”. And we will write them as our religion teaches us, ”concluded Alimov.
Linguist Igor Isaev said that the recommendations for writing the word “God” with the title letter have been there for a long time. “The Ministry of Education, led by Kravtsov, periodically issues what already exists for his initiative. In Russia, there are a lot of other factors that interfere with calmly evaluating what is happening, so why not do spelling? I believe that they [in the Ministry of Education] depict at least some kind of activity. This is a hype attempt to make a hype, ”said Isaev.
He explained that since 2006, in the academic spelling reference book, edited by Vladimir Lopatin, it was recommended to write the word “God” with the title letter.
According to the current rules of the Russian language, the word “God” can be written with both large and small letters depending on the context and religious views of the author. In stable phrases used in colloquial speech outside the direct connection with religion, the words “God” and “Lord” should be written only with a lowercase letter .
