The federal police of the country detained Carsten L. on Wednesday evening. Searches were carried out at two offices of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND).

According to BND President Bruno Kahl, the intelligence service learned about the likely treason in the course of intelligence work. Suspicions were confirmed after internal investigations. Kahl said that in the case of Russia, the BND "must reckon with the unscrupulousness and readiness for violence" of the other side, so the BND cannot reveal the details of the criminal case.

According to Spiegel, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was informed of possible espionage within the ranks of the BND a few weeks ago.
