In 2022, the Kremlin decided to finally destroy the independent media. And they survived again. But how? And most importantly - why?

After the start of hostilities in Ukraine, the Russian authorities did the work of independent media in Russia almost impossible: this is unprecedented censorship , andblocking sites , and a direct threat of criminal prosecution.

As a result, many of the editors either closed or left Russia, or remained in the country, but stopped talking about the war.

It seemed that the Kremlin was about to finally defeat the Russian media. However, by the end of 2022 it is obvious: this plan failed. Independent media continue to work, despite the extreme pressure of the authorities. Moreover, the number of such media is growing .

What allowed Russian independent media to survive? Why do journalists continue to work regardless of risks? And what are their prospects?
