The UK will recognize Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist group in the coming weeks, The Telegraph claims. This decision was made due to the threat to British citizens posed by the IRGC, the publication claims. It quotes the head of the country's security service, Ken McCallum, who in November revealed that the IRGC was preparing the kidnappings and murders of at least ten British citizens and residents.
Recognizing the IRGC as terrorists will make the Corps' participation and support illegal, and will also make it possible to tighten British policy regarding the actions of the Iranian authorities.
The IRGC has been involved in the violent suppression of mass protests in Iran, which have continued since the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in September after being beaten by the “morality police” for wearing the hijab “incorrectly.” More than 500 demonstrators died at the hands of security forces during the dispersal of protests.
