The former chairman of the Supreme Council of the Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic and the first president of Bashkortostan Murtaza Rakhimov died at the age of 88.

The current head of the Republic of Bashkortostan Radiy Khabirov announced the death of Rakhimov in Telegram. “We bow our heads to the great son of the Bashkir people, who devoted all himself to the service of the republic and Russia,” he wrote.
Rakhimov held the post of chairman of the Supreme Council of the Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic from April 7, 1990 to December 24, 1993. Then he served as president of Bashkortostan for almost 17 years - from December 25, 1993 to July 15, 2010.
