The European Parliament adopted a resolution on the creation of a special tribunal to pursue a crime of aggression against Ukraine committed by the political and military leadership of Russia. For her on Thursday, January 19, 472 euro deputies voted in Strasbourg, 19 against - 33 abstained, DW reports.
A special tribunal - by analogy with the Nuremberg process after the Second World War, where the Nazi leaders were judged - should be created in close cooperation with Ukraine and the international community, preferably through the UN, the European Parliament decided. Such tribunals were created by decision of the UN Security Council for judicial persecution of persons guilty of committing war crimes in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.
"The European Parliament believes that the special international tribunal must have jurisdiction for the persecution of not only Vladimir Putin and the political and military leadership of the Russian Federation, but also Alexander Lukashenko and the political and military leadership of Belarus as a participating state, from which, with the material and technical support of which the Russian Federation wages its aggressive war against Ukraine," the document said (a quote for a quote from "European truth" ).
A separate paragraph of the resolution is devoted to the use of sovereign assets of the Russian state to compensate Russia with international law in Ukraine.
The adoption of the document was commented by the President of the European Parliament Robert Metsol.
"The consequences of the Russian war against Ukraine are huge. Children, women, men are killed. Families are broken. Destroyed hospitals. Destroyed houses. Destroyed schools. Today, the European Parliament calls for the urgent creation of a special international tribunal. Military criminals should be held accountable. Immediately," she wrote on Twitter.
