Bloomberg and the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) disagreed on the possible reasons for placing air defense systems on Moscow buildings. Agency sources attributed this to the threat of an attack by Ukrainian drones, and ISW experts linked it to the “information” preparation of Russians for a protracted war in Ukraine.

Russian authorities have decided to deploy air defense systems on rooftops in Moscow after several drone attacks inside Russia, Bloomberg writes , citing officials familiar with the situation. We are talking about the December strikes on military airfields in Ryazan and Engels. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation blamed Ukraine for the then attacks, which denies its involvement. The sources also noted that the new installations should complement the current air defense systems around the capital.

The ISW believes that the Kremlin assesses the threat of an attack on Moscow as unlikely, but with the help of "provocative" publications, it is preparing society inside the country for protracted hostilities and further casualties. Russia, within the framework of its information operation, in particular, is trying to “reduce the context” of the war in Ukraine to the Great Patriotic War (allegedly, Moscow and other cities of the country are being prepared for an attack by Ukraine, as in the period of Nazi Germany’s invasion of the territory of the USSR), in order to enlist support of the population to continue mobilization, experts admit.

Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov "redirected" questions about the installation of air defense systems in the capital to the Ministry of Defense. The department has not yet commented on the situation.
