The Church explained the request by the fact that the house was built on the land of the Crusaders of the Church in 1898-1899 and that in its place the Alexander-Mariinsky House of Causion of the Zalatnaya and Orphanskous clergy of the St. Petersburg diocese was located.
Smolny later announced that the building would be transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church, but the faculty would remain there for another five years. Vice-Governor Boris Piotrovsky said that the authorities studied the “legal aspects”, according to which the church has the right to the building, but “reached an agreement” with the Russian Orthodox Church so that the RASSHS students continue to go to the campus five years after its transfer to the church.
