“The ease with which you decide our fate amazes me.” The court liquidated the Moscow Helsinki Group

The Moscow City Court satisfied the claim of the Ministry of Justice for the liquidation of the oldest Russian human rights organization, the Moscow Helsinki Group. It is reported by Mediazona.

In November, at the request of the prosecutor's office, the organization conducted an unscheduled inspection, after which the formal reason for the lawsuit was that human rights activists participated in conferences outside of Moscow. Thus, they allegedly violated the "limits of territorial activity."

In particular, representatives of the organization carried out observations in courts and applied to the reception of the governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov, the newspaper writes.

“You are committing a great sin. You are destroying the human rights movement! The liquidation of the MHG is a serious blow to the human rights movement not only in Russia but also in the world. The ease with which you decide our fate amazes me. How can it be so easy to destroy what has been built for decades, ”said Valery Borshchev, a human rights activist and co-chairman of the MHG, in court.

Only three journalists were allowed to attend the court session, Mediazona notes, and the lawsuit itself was considered in one session.

The Moscow Helsinki Group has been working since 1976, working to identify violations of human rights and to achieve compliance with international obligations that Russia has taken on.
