Russian authorities will create more than 20 new correctional colonies in annexed Ukrainian territories

The Russian government has instructed the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) to create 24 penal colonies in the regions of Ukraine annexed last fall. The text of the order was published on the Official Internet Portal of Legal Information.

According to the document, it is planned to create 12 correctional colonies on the territory of the self-proclaimed DPR, seven in the so-called LPR, three in the annexed part of the Kherson region, two in the annexed part of the Zaporozhye region and one colony-settlement.

The Russian government also plans to open three medical correctional institutions and three correctional centers there.

According to the reporting of the Federal Penitentiary Service of November 2022, 626 correctional colonies operated in Russia. That is, approximately seven colonies for each region of the Russian Federation.

Last autumn, the publication Sirena and the human rights projects Sitting Rus and Gulagu.net reported that during the retreat from the Kherson region of Ukraine, the Russian military took prisoners from ten Ukrainian colonies to Russia.
