The Ministry of Justice demanded to eliminate the only human rights organization in Mari El

The Ministry of Justice demanded to liquidate the human rights organization "Man and the Law". This was reported on January 30 to IDEL. Reali, its chairman Irina Protasova.

In December, the Ministry of Justice conducted a non -planned audit in the organization. Its results formed the basis of the lawsuit in the Supreme Court of Mari El. According to Irina Protasova , the claims of officials relate to the political nature of the organization’s activity. Human rights activists tried to challenge the conclusions of representatives of the Ministry of Justice, but the court stopped considering their complaint.

“Man and the Law” is the only human rights organization in the Mari EL that has existed since 1999. She was engaged in resonance affairs about the torture of residents of the republic from the security forces. Thanks to the organization, the victims went to the ECHR. In 2014, “Man and Law” were recognized as an ino -agent. After that, the courts fined the organization three times.

At the end of 2022, “Man and Law” received advisory status at the UN Economic and Social Council. With it, the organization can participate in the work of the auxiliary bodies of the UN and give expert assessments.

In recent years, the courts in Russia liquidated several human rights organizations. On December 28, 2021, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation made a decision to terminate the activities of the International Memorial and the Human Rights Center "Memorial". On January 25, 2023, the Moscow City Court eliminated the Moscow Helsinsky group.
