The European Court of Human Rights awarded the St. Petersburg activist Vasily Ivanov 16.3 thousand euros compensation for non-pecuniary damage-he was attacked by LGBT races, but the Russian courts refused to punish the perpetrators.
The decision of the ECHR was announced by the OVD-Info project with reference to the Charity Fund "Sphere". The lawyer Maria Kozlovskaya, who is working with this organization, led Ivanova case in the European Court.
The attack on the activist occurred on June 12, 2012, after his participation in the agreed campaign in support of the LGBT community. On the procession, Ivanov came with a poster of "the Alliance of Heterosexuals and LGBT for equality." After the promotion on the protesters shouting "for Sparta" were attacked by skinheads in masks.
Ivanov recorded beatings and turned to law enforcement agencies, which eventually found that a certain Dmitry Deineko made an attack on him. In 2013, the peace court of St. Petersburg refused to qualify his actions as a manifestation of hatred and regarded them as hooliganism. In 2014, the Dzerzhinsky District Court considered the incident “sprout”. In the "sphere" they say that Deineko himself explained his actions to the court himself.
Russia was excluded from the Council of Europe on March 16, 2022 due to military invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, the Foreign Ministry noted that they would continue to implement the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, if "they have no contradictions with the Russian Constitution." In June 2022, the State Duma speaker Vladislav Volodin said that Russia would not execute the decision of the ECHR made after March 15, 2022. Compensations to applicants who have won cases in Strasbourg before this date will be paid before January 1, 2023 - only in rubles and only in Russian banks. The State Duma was introduced to the State Duma and adopted it at once in three readings. President Vladimir Putin signed the law on June 11.
