Russia has lost about half of its modern tanks in a year of war in Ukraine, according to a report by the British International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), which was reviewed by Der Spigel.

According to the report, since the beginning of the war, Russia has lost about 50% of the pre-war number of T-72B and T-72B3M tanks, as well as a large number of T-80s. These tanks are among the most modern in the Russian arsenal, however, due to high losses, the Russian army was forced to use older equipment, which is being returned to service from warehouses.

In addition, the report reports on the losses of Russian aviation, which experts estimated at 6-8% of the pre-war level. At the same time, among some aircraft models, such as, for example, Su-24M bombers and Su-30SM fighters, the losses are 10-15%.

From the very beginning of the war, Russia suffered serious losses in military equipment. Already in April, were reported hundreds of lost tanks and thousands of armored vehicles . In the initial stages of the war, Russian losses were due both to the effectiveness of the actions of the Ukrainian military, armed with modern anti-tank systems, and to the general unpreparedness of the Russian invasion.
In total, during the war, according to the military-analytical project Oryx, Russia lost more than 1,700 tanks. Of these, 1020 were destroyed, and about 550 more were captured by the Ukrainian military. The rest of the tanks appear abandoned or damaged, since the project has no photo or video evidence of their future fate.
