The State Duma in its final reading adopted a law that prohibits the use of foreign words not contained in standard dictionaries

The State Duma, in the second and third readings, adopted a bill stipulating the “inadmissibility of using foreign words” in the Russian language, with the exception of those included in standard dictionaries. The text of the amendments was published on the website of the lower house of parliament.

The authors of the bill were the State Duma committees on science and higher education, enlightenment and national affairs. Deputies plan to make changes to the federal law “On the State Language”.

According to the text of the document, in some areas it will be prohibited to use foreign words if there are their analogues in the Russian language. We are talking about documents from courts, officials, as well as texts of laws and regulations, media materials, films and advertising. The list of foreign words permitted for use will be contained in standard dictionaries.

“The draft federal law introduces concepts such as normative dictionaries, normative grammars and normative reference books that fix the norms of the modern Russian literary language when used as the state language of the Russian Federation,” the explanatory note says.

The deputies also decided to oblige the federal authorities to create conditions for teaching the Russian language to foreigners and stateless people inside and outside the country. In addition, they will have to create “information resources about the norms of the modern Russian literary language.”
