Slovakian Parliament Recognizes Russia as a "State Supporting Terrorism"

The National Council (unicameral parliament) of Slovakia adopted a resolution recognizing the current Russian regime as “terrorist” and Russia as a “state supporting terrorism.”

The deputies also condemned Russian aggression in Ukraine, including massive attacks on civilians, civilian objects and key energy infrastructure. In addition, the parliament expressed support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

The document separately condemns Russia's direct and indirect threats of readiness to use nuclear weapons. The deputies also refused to recognize the results of referendums in the annexed Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions, which the parliament continues to consider part of Ukraine.

In addition, deputies supported efforts to create a special tribunal to prosecute crimes of aggression , crimes against humanity, and war crimes.

In conclusion, the deputies condemned the hybrid war that Russia is waging on the territory of Slovakia, and also called on law enforcement agencies, special services and other competent bodies of the country not to underestimate the threat, but to take effective measures against it to preserve security and democracy in Slovakia.

• In May 2022, the Lithuanian Seimas declared Russia a "terrorist state." In August, the Latvian parliament adopted a similar decision, and in October, the Estonian parliament called Russia a "state sponsor of terrorism."
• In October, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe adopted a resolution calling on Council of Europe members to recognize the Russian Federation as a "terrorist regime." In November, the European Parliament declared Russia a "state sponsor of terrorism." Two days later, the Dutch parliament did the same. In December, the Polish Sejm adopted a similar resolution. Before that, the Polish Senate recognized the Russian government as a "terrorist regime."
• Also in November, the lower house of the Czech parliament recognized the Russian authorities as a "terrorist regime." In turn, the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee adopted a resolution in December recognizing Russia's actions in Ukraine as genocide.
