Spain allows women with painful periods to take time off

In Spain, women who suffer from pain during menstruation will be able to take a vacation. The decision was made by the local councilors. Spain has become the first country in the European Union to implement this practice. Now sick days due to painful menstruation are only in Indonesia, Japan and Zambia.

Local Equality Minister Irene Montero called the passage of the law a major advance in the area of ​​feminist rights. At the same time, representatives of one of the largest Spanish trade unions, Unión General de Trabajadores, expressed concern that now employers will be less likely to hire women.

The law passed the day before also allows Spaniards who have reached the age of 16 to have an abortion without parental consent.

In addition, the program of sexual education will be expanded in local schools. In educational institutions, girls will also be provided with hygiene products free of charge.
