The losses of Russian troops in Ukraine exceeded the losses of all conflicts in which Russia participated from the Second World War, the report of the American Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) said.
"Russia lost more personnel in Ukraine in the first year of the war than in all its wars after the Second World War combined. The average number of murdered Russian soldiers per month is at least 25 times the number of dead in Chechnya and 35 times the number of those who died in Afghanistan, which emphasizes the harsh realities of the war for exhaustion," the CSIS reports.
According to experts, in the period from February 2022 to February 2023, about 60,000-70,000 Russians were killed in Ukraine. The total loss of the Russian Federation in Ukraine killed, wounded and missing is from 200,000 to 250,000. This figure includes the military, special services, mercenaries of the Wagner PMC, the militants "DPR" and "LPR".
The study includes both Chechen campaigns, the war in the Donbass, as well as conflicts in Afghanistan, Syria, Angola, Egypt, Vietnam and other countries.

In the first year of the war, Russia monthly lost about 5,000 to 5,800 regular and irregular soldiers in Ukraine monthly, the report said.
For comparison, Russia lost from 13,000 to 25,000 military in Chechnya for 15 years (with a three -year pause), on average losing from 95 to 185 soldiers killed a month. The Soviet Union in Afghanistan on average lost from 130 to 145 killed a month.
The war in Ukraine, which was conceived as a blitzkrieg, turned into a war of exhaustion, characterized by positional battles, trenches, manpower attacks, artillery shelling and large losses. Both sides distributed the infantry with artillery along the entire front line, and not collected armored vehicles at certain points for a breakthrough, the authors of the report note.
Developing a strategy in Ukraine, the Russian Federation made several miscalculations, they note in CSIS. The Russian authorities did not believe that the Ukrainian population would fight under the leadership of the government of Vladimir Zelensky, the Ukrainian military would be motivated to keep the defense, and the West would support Ukraine.
Ukraine unexpectedly opposed the enemy with a significant advantage in material resources. One of the factors that probably contributed to the successes of Kyiv was military innovations. Their example is the use of UAVs in combined arms operations. However, the authors of the report recognize, only innovations will not be enough.
"The West, including the United States, should be prepared for a protracted war and long -term support of Ukraine," the document says.
