Russia at Vugledar lost the largest tank battle since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, losing more than 130 armored vehicles - NYT

Over the past three weeks, the Russian army, trying to attack Ugledar, which is being defended by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, has lost more than 130 armored vehicles. The New York Times writes about this, referring to representatives of the Ukrainian army and its own correspondents on the front line.

The authors of the publication call the events of the last three weeks near Vuhledar "the largest tank battle" since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.

As the newspaper notes, the overwhelming failure of the Russian troops was primarily due to their inability to learn from their own mistakes - as in the beginning of the war.

Russian tanks and other armored vehicles attack the fortified Ukrainian positions in columns, falling into ambushes prepared by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

According to the Ukrainian military near Vuhledar, they have well studied the routes along which the Russian army is trying to attack. Attacking Russians usually use the roads, on both sides of which, as a rule, there are mined fields.

As a result, when under fire, Russian armored vehicles cannot maneuver, and when they leave the road, they are blown up by mines.

The NYT information is confirmed by many posts and videos on Russian Telegram channels, including those that support Russian aggression.

Numerous videos, usually taken from Ukrainian drones, show Russian tanks and other armored vehicles advancing in columns coming under fire from the Ukrainian defenders of Vuhledar before they even notice them.

In some videos, the attacking Russian columns are completely burned, without firing a single shot, and the panicked BMP crews crush their own infantry, trying to leave the shelling zone.

According to the NYT, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are using American Javelin anti-tank systems and ATGMs of their own production, Stugna, to combat Russian tanks. With their help, they immobilize or slow down the attacking columns, after which they are hit by artillery, and in some cases by MLRS HIMARS.
