During the capture of Kherson, Russia organized at least 20 torture prisons in the city. This was reported to "Important stories" by the head of the international group of lawyers Mobile Justice Team Wayne Jordash. Together with colleagues, he helps the Ukrainian authorities investigate Russian crimes.
The Mobile Justice Team collected testimonies from more than a thousand local residents who passed through these prisons.
According to Jordash, prisons in Kherson were funded from Russia at the state level. Volodymyr Saldo, the head of the occupation "administration" of the Kherson region, took part in managing them. According to experts, the FSB was responsible for some prisons, military personnel for others, and civilians for others.
“The mass torture chambers funded by the Russian state are not accidental, but part of an elaborate plan with the clear goal of destroying Ukrainian national and cultural identity,” told The Guardian. Jordash
He also noted that those who were related to Ukrainian state bodies or civil society — activists, journalists, civil servants and teachers — ended up in prisons. Some prisoners were detained on the street and accused of “pro-Ukrainian” content on their phones.
“In the torture chambers, prisoners were beaten, beaten with electric shocks, their heads were put into the water, preventing them from breathing. They were also forced to learn and recite pro-Russian slogans, poems and songs,” write Important Stories.
