Roskomnadzor blocked the website of the Mediazona Belarus publication

Roskomnadzor, at the request of an “unknown government agency,” blocked the website of the Mediazona Belarus publication. The Roskomsvoboda project drew attention to this.

Roskomsvoboda suggests that the reason for the blocking is military censorship due to the content on the site. According to the project, the publication began to be blocked in Russia at the end of January.

The “unknown government agency” that demanded to block the site most likely means the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Roskomnadzor blocked the main website of Mediazona in early March 2022. Access to the website of the publication “Mediazona. Central Asia" was closed on March 20, 2022.

• After the outbreak of a full-scale war in Ukraine, Roskomnadzor demanded that the media write about what was happening only with reference to official Russian sources. Journalists were also prohibited from calling the “Russian special operation” an attack, invasion, or declaration of war. Otherwise, the supervisory authority threatened with blocking and fines of up to five million rubles.
• According to Roskomsvoboda, as of February 8, for reasons of military censorship, Roskomnadzor has already blocked more than 10 thousand sites. In total, in 2022, 247,492 thousand Internet resources were added to the register of prohibited sites. “After the start of a special military operation, we strengthened counteraction to the spread of calls for extremism and terrorism, mass unrest and “fake” news on the Internet,” Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov previously said in an interview with Kommersant.
