The Prosecutor General's Office recognized the anti-corruption organization Transparency International as “undesirable”

The Prosecutor General's Office has recognized as “undesirable” the international non-profit organization Transparency International, which researches and fights corruption. Information about this appeared on the department’s social networks.

Transparency International is registered as a non-governmental organization in Berlin, where it is headquartered, but has national branches in more than 100 countries. The organization Transparency International - Russia was recognized as a “foreign agent” in 2015, and in October 2022 its head Ilya Shumanov received the same status.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the NPO “formally acting as an organization fighting corruption around the world, interferes in the internal affairs of the Russian Federation, which poses a threat to the foundations of the constitutional order and security of the Russian Federation.”

• “Undesirable” organizations, in accordance with the law, are prohibited from opening structural divisions on Russian territory, distributing their information materials, including on the Internet, and conducting their projects in the country. Disseminating materials from “undesirable” organizations on social networks, financing them, organizing their activities, or collaborating with them is subject to administrative and criminal liability.
