Russian ballet in "Manege"

At the end of February, a large -scale exhibition “The First Position” was opened in the “Manege” on Isaakievskaya Square. Russian ballet ". In the work on the “first position”, “Manezh” was helped by Rosiso and the Planet9 Bureau, whose team in the fall of 2022 launched another loud Petersburg exhibition-“Balabanov” in Sevkabel Porto. She closed on March 15.

The creators of the new project in Manege gathered almost a thousand exhibits of more than 40 museums, archives and libraries. In space, paintings by Mikhail Vrubel and Zinaida Serebryakova, the pointe by Matilda Kshesinskaya , the posters of “ Russian seasons ”, archival photographs and other objects were put up in space.
Historical artifacts were complemented by new objects - for example, an interactive zone with a ballet machine. As Agniy Sterligova, general director of Planet9, told the Paper, a combination of archival exhibits with multimedia installations and the emphasis on the visual side of the exhibition was needed to attract the general public - those who are not too interested in ballet.
- The exhibition combines extensive material with a rather dashing scenography. We wanted the story to come out not only by science, but emotional and involving. Judging by the records of attendance in the Manege, everything was quite a succeeded.
Two floors of the exhibition hall were divided into several thematic zones, decorated in the style of theatrical backstage. For example, the “royal box” talks about the pre -revolutionary Russian ballet, and the “school” is about the evolution of ballet education. Some zones devoted to narrower aspects of this art: the story of the costume and ballet biomechanics.
An event program with lectures, art media, laboratories and showing ballet plays from the soloists of the Mariinsky and Mikhailovsky Theaters was also timed to the exhibition.

The Manege warns that at the entrance to the exhibition hall there are possible queues, and visitors recommend inspecting the exposition on weekdays: people are less in the hall, and the cost of tickets is lower . "The arena" works until 21:00, and you can go to the exhibition until 19:30.

According to the co -author of the exhibition of the Planet9 CEO, Agniy Sterligova, the ballet as the idea of the exposition is interesting for several reasons. First of all, ballet is a synthesis of music, dance, theater and other arts, so you need to talk about its history, and the language of the narrative should be multi -layer.
“The combination of sports of high achievements and the most severe competition with magic, which we, the audience, see on stage, is fascinating,” says Agnia.
Another important circumstance was the “export potential” of the topic - the Russian ballet became the most important cultural brand of the country, and the creators of the “first position” suggested that the project could be interesting abroad.
- The project was conceived five years ago, and we started active work on it in 2021, when we realized that we thought along with the “Manege” in parallel about the same exhibition. Of course, even at the start, choosing a topic for such a multi -tydjan project, we understood the “export” of everything related to the Russian ballet. We thought about the possibility of subsequent releases .
In 2022, the situation changed dramatically : international museum cooperation practically stopped, and one of the first to feel the Petersburg Manege on himself - there was canceled the personal exhibition of French artist Christian Boltansky, which was to open on March 13, 2022.
By March 2023, the situation with international cultural cooperation remains difficult, and in St. Petersburg museums and galleries there has long been a tendency to “seal” posters . Due to the impossibility of inviting foreign authors, exhibition sites are increasingly turning to domestic art.
“That's it - we work with local topics and local context, since their supply is huge, and Russian culture is vast,” Sterligova commented on this trend.
The new exposition in the Manege is not the first noticeable Planet9 exhibition in St. Petersburg
In addition to the sensational exposition of Balabanov in Sevkabel Porto, the Planet9 team worked on many other exhibitions in St. Petersburg. For example, the Bureau has been responsible for the exhibition of the Korean artist Lee Bul , an exposition with pictures of Magnum photographers and the project “peace and joy”, presenting idyllic Russian art .

In St. Petersburg, they can transport Planet9 from other Russian exhibition sites, although there is no specific information about this yet.
- I think that the trend for the increase in museum visitors, which has developed in recent years, will not change. Perhaps even intensify. We see this by the attendance of our own projects - people need to be distracted from the current agenda.
