Linguists did not find “discredit” of the Russian army in the video with the story of an Azov fighter about the use of phosphorus bombs against the battalion. The accused journalist had his preventive measure commuted

Valery Badmaev, editor-in-chief of the Sovremennaya Kalmykiya newspaper, had his preventive measure mitigated - the ban on certain actions was replaced with a written undertaking not to leave the country. He told about this to the Kavkaz.Realii publication.

Badmaev was detained in December 2022. A criminal case was opened against him on the repeated “discrediting” of the Russian army (Part 1 of Article 280.3 of the Criminal Code) due to the repost of the video on Vkontakte. In the video, a fighter from the Ukrainian Azov battalion tells how phosphorus bombs were used against the defenders of Azovstal in Mariupol.

In a conversation with Kavkaz.Realii, Badmaev said that linguists did not find the army “discredited” in the video: “In the video, the fighter does not speak directly about the Russian army, does not call it using the pronoun “they”. When asked by the investigator whether the video contains words that discredit the use of the Russian armed forces, the examination came to the logical conclusion that the Russian army was not specifically named in the video.”

The Elista City Court changed Badmaev's measure of restraint to a written undertaking not to leave.

In April 2022, the journalist was fined 35,000 rubles under an administrative article on “discrediting” Russian troops (20.3.3 of the Code of Administrative Offenses).
