The largest insulin manufacturer Eli Lilly leaves the Russian market

The American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly transfers his business to the Swiss partner SWIXX BIOPHARMA and completely leaves the Russian market. It is reported by "Kommersant" with reference to its own sources. Eli Lilly is a skewed manufacturer of insulin, cancer and antidiabetic drugs.

As the interlocutors of the publication noted, the SWIXX BIOPHARMA will probably deal with the distribution of those drugs that the Eli Lilly continued to supply to Russia after the announcement of the export of its products to the Russian market a year ago. Then the company promised to maintain the supply of insulin "Humalog", the antidiabetic drug "Trulisity" and the oncological drugs "Zenlistik", "Ciramza", "Alimta" and "Gemzar".

Eli Lilly is already the second large American pharmaceutical company, which left the Russian market against the backdrop of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and transferred business to the SWIXX BIOPHARMA department. Last May, the American Bristol-Myers Squibb did the same in the same way.

Insulin deficiency

According to the President of the Moscow Diabetic Association (MDA) Elvira Plastova, in Russia, after the start of military invasion of Ukraine, problems are observed with the availability of insulin in pharmacies. At first, the deficit was provoked by the desire of the patients to form stocks, and then, according to Derestova, problems with logistics began.

She claims that the problems affected not only imported drugs, but also those that are produced in Russia-components from abroad are used for a number of them.

“As a result, the insulin market in Russia has declined, and the pharmacies get fewer drugs, since the main part goes to purchases by state medical institutions to provide people with diabetes according to preferential recipes,” explained Dubstova in an interview with RTVI.

According to her, insulin deficit was observed in 15 Russian cities with a different population, including in St. Petersburg. In early March, residents of the Ivanovo region reached single pickets with the poster "Officials of the Health Department! Stop deception. In pharmacies, empty shelves, a shortage of medicine kills the population. Comer into think!" In the comments to the post, a resident of Bashkortostan wrote "we have the same."

At the same time, insulin manufacturers themselves claim that there are no problems with the availability of drugs in Russian pharmacies.

• The deficiency of imported drugs due to the war and the subsequent sanctions, which violated the logistics chains, began to speak almost immediately after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Russians complained that they could not find the necessary drugs in pharmacies.
• According to the analytical company RNC PHARMA, which lead Vedomosti, in 2022, drugs with 99 active substances (eight percent of all imported items) ceased to import into Russia. At the same time, some of them were imported - simply not like finished products.
