Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak and more than a thousand entrepreneurs called for a pause in the development of artificial intelligence due to the “risk to society”

Space X CEO Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and more than 1,000 AI entrepreneurs and executives have signed an open letter calling on labs to halt development of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 for six months. They suggest taking a break until common security protocols are in place. The text of the letter was published by the non-profit organization Future of Life.

“Advanced artificial intelligence has the potential to change the history of life on Earth and needs to be managed with the utmost care. Unfortunately, this level of planning and management does not exist, although in recent months AI labs have been caught up in an uncontrolled race to develop ever more powerful digital minds that even their creators cannot comprehend.

According to the authors of the letter, the activity of artificial intelligence systems has become difficult to predict and reliably control. Entrepreneurs are calling on independent experts to come together and develop common security protocols to further develop AI.

The open letter was also signed by Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn, Stability AI CEO Emod Mastak and writer Yuval Noah Harari. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman did not sign the document.

The American OpenAI introduced a new version of the language model with generative artificial intelligence GPT-4 in March 2023. It is based on ChatGPT, which can keep up a conversation and answer any questions, adapting to the needs of the user, learning in real time and using most of the knowledge accumulated by mankind.
