Stalingrad for the elderly

Russian Field reports:

“Most residents of Volgograd do not want to change the name of the city.

The fact that the city is most suitable for the name Volgograd was said by 74 % of respondents. A little less than the fifth (18 %) chose the name Stalingrad. Only 5 % of respondents prefer Tsaritsyn among other options.

70 % of the city’s residents would not support the decision of the authorities to rename the city to Stalingrad, a quarter (25 %) would support. Young people are more often opposed, but even among older people 51 % would not agree with such a decision of the authorities.

Respondents most often called the following purposes of renaming Volgograd to Stalingrad:

- a reminder of the feat in the Great Patriotic War, the preservation and restoration of history (25 %);

- "laundering" of money, corruption goals (24 %);

- Raising the level of patriotism (23 %).

The fact that renaming is necessary to raise patriotism and reminders of the exploits of the Second World War, the elderly residents of the city more often spoke, the corruption component was mainly reported by respondents of 18–59 years. ”
