A week after Gershkovich’s arrest, the Lefortovo court published information about the hearing on its website

The Lefortovo District Court of Moscow, a week after the arrest of American Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich on espionage charges (Article 276 of the Criminal Code), published information about the hearing. Mediazona drew attention to this.

It follows from the card that the preventive measure was chosen by Elena Vyacheslavovna Kaneva. In addition, it became known that the defense appealed the court’s decision to send the US citizen to a pre-trial detention center. According to information on the court's website, this happened the day after the arrest, March 31.

Gershkovich was detained on the evening of March 29 in Yekaterinburg. According to the FSB, the correspondent “on instructions from the American side, collected information constituting a state secret about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex.” On March 30, the journalist was taken to Moscow and sent into custody.

A Mediazona correspondent came to the Lefortovo District Court before the selection of a preventive measure for Gershkovich. He saw how the detainee was taken out of the car and taken into the building. As a result, the bailiffs blocked the fifth floor of the court and did not allow entry there, including lawyer Daniil Berman with a warrant to protect Gershkovich.

Journalists from various publications awaiting the court's decision were pushed to the third floor. A Mediazona correspondent noticed a man in handcuffs who was led to the guard staircase. Then he assumed that the meeting was over. Media representatives turned to the court's press secretary with a request to provide information about the judge's decision, but the employee of the institution left, and the bailiffs said that she did not want to communicate with the press.
