Medicines were taken away from the arrested ex-coordinator of Navalny's Barnaul headquarters

The former coordinator of Navalny's Barnaul headquarters, Vadim Ostanin, who was arrested in the case of organizing an extremist community, said that his medicines and other things were taken from him in the pre-trial detention center. Part of his letter is cited by the Siren publication.

Ostanin is serving his arrest in pre-trial detention center No. 1 in the Altai Territory. The activist told reporters that during a search in his cell, the detention center management took away his personal hygiene items, books and medicines. Ostanin was told that he would be given a receipt according to which he could take these things for temporary use.

The administration supposedly keeps all these things “in storage,” but Ostanin actually cannot use them. Due to lack of medicine, his health is deteriorating.

“Some medicines have run out and are in storage along with things. I have a doctor’s permission for the medicine, but I can’t pick it up: I need some other doctor’s permission to pick it up. Several times I wrote to the head of the prison for an appointment with a doctor - the result was zero,” Sirena quotes Ostanin as saying.

At the end of March, the activist complained about the tortured conditions in pre-trial detention center No. 1, due to which his health began to deteriorate. Ostanin spent a long time in a punishment cell, which was a basement with a window littered with garbage, without hot water and a place to sleep. The cell was once flooded with water, and it had to be shared with rats, spiders and ants.

Ostanin is accused of organizing an extremist community (Part 1 of Article 282.1 of the Criminal Code) and participation in a non-profit organization that infringes on the personality and rights of citizens (Part 3 of Article 239 of the Criminal Code). In December 2021, the court chose a preventive measure for him in the form of a ban on certain actions, but in March 2022 the man was taken into custody.
