At the Khakaton “Flight 2023: the effects of the war”, which is held by the “New Gazeta Europe” and “Greenhouse of Social Technologies”, one of the teams decided to find out whether this is so. Khakaton participants analyzed 10 thousand profiles on VKontakte of supporters and opponents of war to understand who these people are, what values they actually adhere to if they remove propaganda templates, and whether they have at least something common that can become the soil for dialogue.
The most important thing from research
Despite different political views and the difference in interests on some issues, supporters and opponents of the war have a lot in common. They constantly coexist in the same information space: they read public about history, sports, music and interior design.
Supporters of the war most often define their political views on VKontakte as “moderate”, which can speak of their weak political identity or completely apoliticality.
Not only liberals are opposed to the war. Among the opponents of the war, actively using VKontakte, the “liberals” make up only about half, another 20% are on conservatives and left.
Supporters of the war on VKontakte show more interest in what is similar to the “traditional values” proposed by propaganda: family and children are more important to them, and they usually consider themselves Orthodox.
In large cities (mainly in St. Petersburg and Moscow), there are significantly more opponents of war than supporters. However, about half of the anti -tuned VKontakte users is still outside these cities.
Supporters of the war on VKontakte on average three to five years older than opponents. Such a difference, as well as the difference in geography, can be explained by sources of information that various categories of people tend to use (residents of older cities in small cities are more likely to watch TV and use VPN less often).
Representatives of both groups - both supporters and opponents of war - most often value kindness and honesty in people, and this value does not depend on whether a person supports war.
In February 2023, the team of the Independent Chronicle project conducted a study , during which she asked the respondents the question: “Do you think the special operation is more likely to look like the Great Patriotic War or is more different from it?” In propaganda stamps, the image of Russia, fighting with the Nazis in Ukraine, is used very widely today. With the help of this question, the project team wanted to understand how the responsible people were prone to propaganda.
Half of the respondents first answered this question, and then to questions regarding the war in Ukraine: whether the respondent supports, what goals he sees for “special operations”, how he relates to evasion from participation in military operations and repressions regarding anti -tuned people. And half, on the contrary, began with answers to questions about the war in Ukraine, and then received the question of similarity to the Great Patriotic War.
The results were interesting. In the second group, which first answered questions about the war in Ukraine, and then compared what was happening with the Great Patriotic War, the assessment of the similarity of these events was much lower than in the first group. This decrease was especially noticeable among those respondents who support the “special operation” and say that they never doubted their position.
“Even if you just ask a person questions and give a person to think independently about the answers, supporters of“ Svo ”are quite capable of changing their views and get away from propaganda stamps,” the analyst “Chronic” Andrei Tkachenko, analyst at the “Chronicles”, commented on the results.
In addition, in his opinion, the data obtained suggests that building a constructive dialogue between supporters and opponents of war is possible if they have common interests.
In the outbreak of war, discontinuation plays a significant role - both Ukrainians, regarding which propaganda repeats that they are not people, but the Nazis and ideological opponents: it is easier to think that those who support the murders cannot be people. In addition to the fact that the division is destructive in itself, because of it, people stop even trying to understand each other. The lack of mutual understanding leads to the polarization of society and to further radicalization, since people are deprived of the opportunity to receive information from the outside of their group, and hence the opportunity to change the position.
In our study, we tried to better understand those with whom in ordinary life we are in contact little. In addition to universal arguments, the understanding of the supporters of the war will help to find out how propaganda works, which means it is more effective to confront it.
After the Instagram social network was blocked in March 2022, its attendance by Russian users decreased sharply. In February 2022, on average, at least once a day, 31% of Russians over 12 years old entered Instagram. In February 2023, this indicator amounted to only 6%, the audience decreased by five times .
Some users switched to alternative sites - to the Telegram messenger and the VKontakte social network. The latter became the most popular social network in Russia. According to the VKontakte press service , the audience of the social network in the third quarter of 2022 increased by 6.9%-now on VKontakte a record 76.9 million is entered monthly, and 49.4 million users daily. That is why for our research we decided to choose this site.
We analyzed more than 10 thousand profiles of supporters and opponents of the war and tried to understand how representatives of these groups present themselves to what they converge and how they differ.
To find users of interest to us, we searched for the speech features of both groups in the requests. We searched supporters of the war according to the “special military operation”, by offensive vocabulary, which is used by propaganda in relation to Ukrainians (“Bandera”, “Khokhly”), and according to the popular wire hashtags ( #our own, #zanas ”and so on). Opponents - according to“ Russian invasion ”, which are used by vocabulary in relation to its supporters (“Rashists”, “Zombie” and so on), and according to popular anti -war hashtags ( #there is no one, #StoprussianaggRESSION and so on).
As a result, we selected 16 383 users, 6752 of which used anti -war vocabulary, and 9631 - wire. Of these, we took only those from whom Russia is indicated as a country of residence - they turned out to be 10551, of which 3267 opposed the war, and 7284 support it. Of course, many supporters and opponents of the war do not use VKontakte, so this sample in any case is not a quantitative representation of all Russians. It reflects only users of a particular social network who have a fairly confident position about the war, as well as the characteristics of supporters and opponents.
At the same time, it was more difficult to look for anti -war posts. VKontakte is not a safe platform, it is controlled by state structures, large groups in which “uncomfortable” issues are asked, and are blocked. Therefore, for obvious reasons, anti -war posts have published less on VKontakte: probably, opponents of war think about their safety and do not write public posts on social networks, to which the Russian special services have direct access.
After that, we analyzed user subscriptions and checked whether it is possible to determine the user’s position in relation to the war. We decided to do this with the help of machine learning. We taught the simple model to determine on the basis of subscriptions whether the user is a supporter or enemy of war. To predict that the user adheres to an anti -war position is possible in 86% of cases. For pure users, the share of a correctly guessed position is 71%.
As we thought
After the automatic search, we independently read 311 posts of users found to evaluate the proportion of correctly classified posts. It turned out that some people using “wire” or “anti -war” vocabulary adhered to opposite positions. For example, part of the opponents of the war used the words “Bandera” with sarcasm. Some posts did not contain information about the position about the war (for example, the words “Russian invasion” were used to describe other historical events).
As a result, it turned out that among posts classified as anti -war ones, it can be considered about 67%. Among the wire posts, this accuracy reached 96%. These ratios were used in the future analysis.
It is important to note that only users with an open page and with a fairly confident position got into our sample: the doubters would not write a post on the wall of their profile.
Another important task was to separate real users from bots. We compared the distributions of all key indicators of the page activity that is easy to get from VKontakte: the number of subscribers, photographs, audio recordings and other information. According to these indicators, the supporters of the war we found were no different from opponents, which means, most likely, the vast majority of them are real people, not fakes or bots. In addition, bots, as a rule, do not write messages on their wall, but only like likes and leave comments in public, which once again confirms the sample: we study real people.
More detailed technical information on the study can be found here . The code and anonymous data used for research are posted on GitHub .
From the very beginning of the war, stereotypes about the supporters and enemy “Svo” were quite quickly formed . A supporter is a conditional grandmother from a little village who watches TV in the evenings and votes for Putin in every election. The enemy is a student who goes to rallies and does not support the actions of the Kremlin.
Most independent research (here's another example ), indeed, suggest that supporters of war are usually older than opponents. Our study does not reflect the population of the country as a whole, so we cannot draw conclusions from absolute values: we have only the demography of the studied users of VKontakte, and we can compare the difference between the age and opponents of the war, who lead an active life in VKontakte.
The average age of people supporting the war - 45 years, median - also 45. For opponents of war, these values are 42 and 40 years, respectively. The age difference is minimal, but the supporters of the war were actually older than opponents.
However, age is not the ultimate reason for support for war. The influence of age on the support of the war is largely explained by the difference in information sources, Andrei Tkachenko is sure.
According to the Khnik expert, the difference in the number of Internet users in different age groups is small: among young people (up to 34 years old), 84%use the Internet, among middle-aged people (35–54 years)-78%. However, among young people, one and a half times the number of VPN users, and among middle -aged people, one and a half times more watch TV. Older people (55+ years) in 90% of cases watch TV, in 58% use Internet sources, while only 7% of them have VPN, and therefore access to a wider range of information.
We are used to the idea that people with liberal views are opposed to the war . As for the supporters of the war, it intuitively seems that only convinced conservatives or communists who have longing for the Soviet Union and disagree with the “new” contours of the country on the map support it.
Having studied the interests of the representatives of our sample, we decided to analyze how users represent themselves in the VKontakte profile. The political position is indicated in 995 (14%) supporters and 662 (20%) opponents of the war. Among the representatives of the second group, more percentage are adherents of liberal values. For users of VKontakte, which we defined in our analysis as supporters of war, this is one of the most unpopular options for political views along with libertarian values. The most popular views among the nuclear representatives are “moderate”. But what does it mean?
“Neutral or moderate political views, in my experience, are indicated by many people who cannot determine their position with accurate words,” the sociologist Lyubov Borusyak explains. - This is a rather traditional way of political self -presentation, such people are little interested in politics, often do not want to know what is happening, removed from this. Many simply protect themselves from information because it is too heavy.
According to the December survey of the Levada Center, the number of respondents who monitor the events in Ukraine very carefully increased only in March (29%) and in September (32%), when mobilization was announced. This observation only confirms the opinion of Borusyak: no matter how state propaganda tried to show the involvement of the loyal authorities of Russians in the war, they are interested in what is happening only in situations when events can affect them personally.
Thus, “moderate” views can mean a reduced interest in politics among supporters of war, which is perfectly laid down on a narrative, actively advancing propaganda for many years, which is not worth it in politics.
Interestingly, the number of anti -war and wire -dinked users, separating socialist, communist and monarchical views, differs slightly.
The political scientist and founder of the analytical project Re: Russia Kirill Rogov offers to unite users into four groups in political views. Supporters of moderate and indifferent views fall into a group of people with weak political identity, liberals and libertarians - in a group of people with mlying views, supporters of monarchical, conservative and ultra -conservative views - in a group of conservatives, and communists and socialists in groups.
“Then we will see, in my opinion, the most significant result of the study,” Rogov comments. - Among the opponents of the war, the liberals make up only about half of the total contingent, 20% are conservatives and left -wing (though socialists may well be liberal socialists). And among the war support group, the main part is not convinced conservatives, but people with weak political identity, which are mostly “outside politics”. Conservatives are 30% of supporters of war, who are most likely in the Kremlin’s ideological trend. But, as we see, a certain part of those who consider themselves conservatives are configured against war.
However, it resembles horns, it is worth remembering that we will explore users with increased network activity. That is, it may turn out that, for example, the opponents of the war are different among conservatives with increased network activity, although they make up a clear minority in their group. And not so active conservatives can be supporters of war.
But still, the observation that the anti -war contingent includes ideological conservatives and ideological leftists is conflicting with the usual rhetoric, that people with liberal views are opposed to the war. Not only liberals are opposed to the war, and supporters of the war are more likely apolitical.
Moscow and St. Petersburg are traditionally considered the most “protest” cities, and more opponents of the war in them are expected. But what happens in small cities that felt the effects of war and mobilization noticeably more?
Having collected data on the geography of our sample users, we noticed that in St. Petersburg and Moscow there lives much more opponents of war than supporters. However, about half of the anti -tuned VKontakte users who fell into our sample is still outside these cities (49%).
“In smaller cities, the support of“ Svo ”is higher, but there is also less the prevalence of the VPN and a stronger penetration of television,” says Andrei Tkachenko. - If we take into account the sources of information and age differences, then the size of the settlement does not have the effect on supporting “sucker”.
In addition, it is important to understand that some users could leave Russia, but not change their city and the country in the VKontakte profile, which affects the results. It is impossible to check whether the city with the actual location coincides in the profile.
But are there many of them? It is unlikely.
Russian Field .
