A court in Kuban will consider the case of a policeman accused of the death of a detainee

The first court hearing will take place on April 20. The security officer is accused of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm, resulting in the death of a person through negligence (Part 4 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code) and abuse of office (Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code).

The initiation of a criminal case against the police officer became known in September 2021. A year and a half later, Korchagin was sent under house arrest. Lawyers for the Team Against Torture and the prosecutor insisted on a stricter measure of restraint. As a result, the security officer was sent to a pre-trial detention center.

Shortly before the death of Krasnodar resident Ilya Afrosin, they were detained twice. The first arrest occurred on June 29, 2021. The next day, the Kuban citizen was fined one thousand rubles under the protocol of petty hooliganism (Part 2 of Article 20.1 of the Administrative Code). After that, he sent his sister a video showing signs of beatings on the head, neck and shoulder, as well as abrasions from handcuffs. In addition, in the video he talks about “illegal actions of patrol officers.”

On July 1, Afrosin was detained for the second time. A few hours later he was found unconscious near a store 20 minutes' walk from the police department.

“It took an hour and a half to call the ambulance from different phones. The guy felt really bad, he threw back his tongue, lost consciousness, held his stomach, said that it hurt,” human rights activists report the witness’s comment.

According to the death certificate, the Kuban man died in an ambulance due to a spleen injury. The detainee's parents learned of his death almost a month later. The morgue refused to give them the body while the examination was underway.

According to investigators, Korchagin hit Afrosin in the stomach several times and sent him home. Two more police officers, according to the Team Against Torture, saw their colleague beating the detainee, but did not stop him. The Investigative Committee began an investigation against them on April 13.
