A Russian air bomb fell in Belgorod. What is known about this?

On the evening of April 20, a powerful explosion occurred in the center of Belgorod at the intersection of Vatutin Avenue and Gubkin Street. As a result, a funnel with a diameter of more than 20 meters was formed, the surrounding houses and cars parked nearby were damaged, one of which was thrown onto the roof of the nearest building by the blast wave.

According to the governor of the Belgorod region Vyacheslav Gladkov, three women were injured in the incident, two of them were hospitalized with a head injury and high blood pressure, and the third refused hospitalization with bruises and abrasions.

According to Gladkov, four apartments were damaged by the explosion. The authorities decided to completely resettle the three-entrance five-story residential building in which they were located. The explosion also destroyed several cars.

A large number of videos from surveillance cameras and car registrars have spread on the network, on some of them the sound of a flying jet aircraft is heard a few seconds before the explosion.

Versions quickly appeared in the propaganda media that the cause of the explosion was a Ukrainian Soviet-made Strizh drone heavily loaded with explosives. Previously, the Armed Forces of Ukraine used such UAVs to strike Russian strategic aviation bases near Ryazan and Saratov.

Soon the incident was commented on by the Russian Ministry of Defense. They said that a Su-34 fighter-bomber flying over the city "had an abnormal ammunition depletion."

Shortly before the incident, pro-military telegram channels reported on the take-off of Russian bombers armed with FAB-1500 one and a half ton high-explosive bombs.

In Belgorod, a planning high-explosive bomb equipped with a universal ammunition planning and correction module (UMPC) could explode. Kirill Mikhailov, an OSINT analyst who collaborated with the Conflict Intelligence Team, told the Agency about this. According to him, Russia is now actively using such ammunition in the war in Ukraine.

“In order for everything to work, the bomb must first be properly separated, then its wings must open properly and the navigation system should work,” the expert says, “something went wrong in this process,” Mikhailov explained.
