The Seversky City Court imposed a fine of one million rubles on 65-year-old lawyer and author of the telegram channel “Pravda Gorod Seversk” Marina Novikova under the article on the dissemination of military “fakes” (Part 1 of Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code). This was reported by OVD-Info. Novikova asked the court to sentence her to actual imprisonment, since she did not have the money to pay the fine.
A criminal case about “fakes” was opened against the lawyer on March 15, 2022. Her prosecution was one of the first in Russia under the then-new article on military “fakes.” Searches were carried out at her home, after which Novikova was banned from certain actions - she was not allowed to use the Internet. According to investigators, Novikova disseminated “inaccurate information about the shelling of Ukrainian cities” in the telegram channel “Pravda Gorod Seversk.” In particular, she was charged with posts about the attempt to capture the Ukrainian city of Energodar by the Russian army.
Novikova insisted that all her publications were confirmed by publicly available information and data that was passed on to her by friends living in Energodar. The prosecution requested three years in prison for the lawyer.
“I am ready to pay for the right to remain a human being and an individual, because I understand that there will be no acquittal. This is not why everything was started, and justice is not for me and not for people like me. I ask the court for only one thing, to impose not a fine, but a sentence immediately, because even for the minimum amount of the fine defined in the article I am charged with, and with an installment plan of five years, I have nowhere to get money,” Novikova said in her last word before the announcement sentence.
