"Dad is still here - just in a different guise"

Curi Richins, 33, and her husband, Eric Richins, 39, lived in the small mountain town of Camas, Utah. Kuri worked as a real estate agent, and Eric owned a construction business and was fond of hunting. The Richins have been married for nine years. They have three sons, six-year-old Weston, eight-year-old Ashton and ten-year-old Carter.

On March 3, 2022, Kuri closed a working deal to sell her house - and she and her husband decided to celebrate the occasion. Eric drank his wife's Moscow Mule and they went to bed. Kuri woke up around 3:00 a.m., because one of her sons had a nightmare, she said. When she returned from her son's room to the bedroom, she found Eric lying "cold to the touch" on the floor.

After the death of her husband, Kuri decided to write about how to survive the death of a loved one. On March 7, 2023, a little over a year after Eric's death, Kuri's children's book, Are You With Me?, was released. It tells the story of a boy who lost his father but realized that he was still watching him in the form of an angel. According to Kuri, she wrote this book to show her children: "Daddy is still here - just in a different guise."

41-page "Are you with me?" entered the top 5,000 best books on Amazon, and the grieving widow Richins was invited to an interview on a local TV channel. However, already in May 2023, she was charged with the murder of her husband. Kuri now faces 25 years to life in prison.

Five times the lethal dose

A toxicology report showed that Eric Richins died of an overdose of fentanyl, an opioid analgesic used to relieve pain. Drug users often use it as a substitute for heroin. The concentration of fentanyl in Eric's system was about five times the lethal dose.

The investigation revealed that Kuri lied when she described what she did on the night of Eric's death. She said that at about three in the morning she went to her son's room, and left her phone in her bedroom with her husband. But investigators found that while the phone was allegedly just lying in the bedroom, it was locked and unlocked several times, and also sent and received messages that were later deleted.

After examining Kuri's phone, the police also determined that from December 2021 to February 2022, she corresponded with a man signed in court documents as CL. He was repeatedly accused of drug possession. Kuri herself planned to sell GHB, a depressant that is used as a psychoactive substance.

CL told investigators that Kuri first bought painkillers from him, ostensibly for an acquaintance who had a back injury, and then, on February 11, 2022, came for 15-30 fentanyl tablets and paid $900 for them.

On February 14, Eric and Kuri hosted a homemade Valentine's Day dinner. After that, Eric felt unwell. He told his friends that he blamed his wife for this: she, in his opinion, tried to poison him - their testimony is mentioned in court documents.

On February 26, Kuri approached CL for another dose of fentanyl. Her husband died six days later.

“If anything happens to him, it will be her fault.”

Erica's sister told investigators that he had previously suspected his wife of trying to poison him. While Eric and Kuri were vacationing together in Greece, his wife gave him a drink - and he became very ill, and then called his sister and told her that Kuri tried to kill him. He also warned those close to him that "if anything happened to him, it would be her fault." But, despite suspicions, Eric never divorced his wife.

Two months before her husband's death, Kuri tried to secretly redo the documents: she wanted to make Eric's insurance payments only for herself (according to the documents, the money should have gone to the family and his business partner). If she succeeded, then in the event of Eric's death, she would be the only one who would receive insurance payments. The company reported this to Eric and his business partner, and they returned the old version of the documents. Before his death, Eric rewrote the insurance for his sister. He didn't tell his wife about it.
