Japan has no plans to join NATO, but the issue of opening an alliance office in Tokyo is discussed, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kisid at a government meeting said , Reuters reports.

According to Kisida, he has no data whether a decision is made to open the NATO office in Japan. The official noted that Japan does not plan to join the alliance as a permanent or associated member.

In May, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimas Hayashi in May announced plans to open a representative office of NATO - the first alliance office in Asia. Hayashi emphasized that Russia's military invasion of Ukraine is reflected in stability around the world, and Japan should strengthen the safety of its region. According to him, although the country is not included in NATO, the opening of the office will indicate close cooperation of the parties.

NATO General Director Jens Stoltenberg confirmed the fact of negotiations. He called Japan a close and important partner of the North Atlantic Alliance.
