British Parliament Recognizes Holodomor as Genocide of Ukrainian People

Members of the House of Commons of the British Parliament unanimously supported the decision to recognize the Holodomor of the 1930s as genocide of the Ukrainian people, the BBC Russian Service reports.

The vote was initiated by Conservative MP Pauline Letham. According to her, the decision should be a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin in connection with the war he unleashed in Ukraine.

"The Soviet Union exterminated millions of Ukrainians by forcibly starving them to death and forcibly resettling them, which is reminiscent of what is happening in Ukraine today. Stalin in the 1930s, like Putin today, wanted to destroy the Ukrainian people and Ukrainian identity," the deputy said.

The vote in the British parliament does not imply any specific steps, journalists note.

• The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine declared the Holodomor an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people in 2006. The Ukrainian authorities have been seeking official recognition of the Holodomor as genocide for years. Against the backdrop of the war, some countries supported this decision.
• The list of countries that have officially recognized the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people includes the United States, Canada, Australia, Portugal, Mexico, Brazil, France, Iceland and others.
